How Do Orthodontists Create a Treatment Plan for Each Patient?

Whether you have already undergone orthodontic treatment or are interested in starting, you may wonder how orthodontists create unique treatment plans for each patient. At Johnson Orthodontics, our team is dedicated to helping new patients reach their smile goals and be confident in their journey with us. Read on to learn more about the steps we take to diagnose orthodontic issues, how we review your plan, and our available treatment options.

Diagnosing and Creating Your Treatment Plan

Thorough Oral Examination

When you come in for your free consultation, Dr. Johnson will begin by conducting an oral examination to take note of initial signs of orthodontic issues. This will help us better understand if any further examinations will be required to help diagnose and create your treatment plan.

Our team will then take some digital photographs of your teeth. Once your treatment plan is complete, you can look at your before and after photos to see your amazing progress!

Digital Impression

We will also take a digital impression of your teeth. Johnson Orthodontics stays up-to-date on the latest orthodontic technology – no goopy impressions here! We use the iTero Element scanner, a wand that scans each of your teeth and creates an intricate 3D model of the exact positioning of your teeth and gums. The entire scan takes around ten minutes to complete.

This technology allows us to create a customized care plan unique to every patient. As a result, you can rely on the most effective and efficient treatment. The scanner also enables us to craft precisely fitted appliances that you will be comfortable wearing throughout your treatment.

Taking X-Rays

The next step is capturing the necessary x-rays. X-rays allow us to learn more about the development of your teeth as well as their current and future positioning. We use cephalometric and panoramic x-rays to see various views of your teeth, jaws, and soft facial tissue.

Our x-rays use minimal radiation and help us determine the best placement for your appliance. If your dentist has taken a panoramic x-ray within the past six months, please bring it to your appointment.

Dental and Medical History

Finally, Dr. Johnson carefully reviews your dental and medical history. This information is crucial in crafting your treatment plan as it provides him with insight into what other procedures or operations you’ve had in the past, how your body has reacted to medications that may be used in our offices, relevant allergies, and much more. Each of these things can affect his recommendations moving forward.

Reviewing Your Unique Treatment Plan

Once your treatment plan is complete, Dr. Johnson will join you in a private consultation room where he will explain any areas of concern and what kind of corrections can be expected. He will provide examples of similar patient cases so you can see what your teeth might look like before and after, but your treatment plan will be unique to your case.

The treatment process will be thoroughly explained, including how often appointments will need to be scheduled, the best treatment options to achieve your smile goals, insurance and payment plans, and much more. We will be more than happy to answer any questions you have about your orthodontic needs so that you’ll have full confidence in our services upon leaving your appointment.

Your Care Options

Invisalign

Invisalign, the future of orthodontics, is available at our practice! Using this approach, you’ll be able to achieve the smile you’ve always wanted without anyone ever guessing that you’re  undergoing treatment! Invisalign uses a series of custom-made, clear acrylic trays that are switched out every two weeks to slowly guide your teeth into their correct positions.

Keep in mind that the trays must stay in your mouth for at least 22 hours per day in order to remain on schedule with your plan. However, you’ll have minimal interruption to your daily life as there are no food restrictions, and your oral maintenance routine will stay the same.

Clear Braces

Another popular treatment option is clear braces. For those who want something a little more discreet than traditional metal braces, clear braces are a perfect way to accomplish that goal.

Clear braces use the same reliable technology as traditional metal braces, only with tooth-colored ceramic brackets and clear or tooth-colored elastic ties that blend in with your smile.

Metal Braces

A tried-and-true option, modern metal braces are the most popular treatment choice, thanks to their long history of success. Now smaller and more discreet than ever, metal braces will help you reach your smile goals no matter how complex your dental issues. They are made up of brackets, wires, elastics, and other components that place slight pressure on your teeth for the entirety of your treatment plan to shift them into the perfect position.
