Do I Need Dental Insurance to Get Orthodontic Treatment?

When looking into orthodontic treatments, one of the first things you may be wondering is whether or not your insurance can assist you with part of the cost. Common questions Johnson Orthodontics gets during our consultations is if patients need dental insurance to even get orthodontic treatment in the first place, as well as the payment options we offer. There are more options than you may expect.

Understanding Orthodontics

What does an orthodontist do?

Specializing in the alignment of both your teeth and jaw, an orthodontist, like our very own Dr. Johnson, works with you to improve your smile. They diagnose, prevent, and treat any irregularities as your teeth shift over time. Treating young children to seniors, the work of an orthodontist can have a positive impact beyond oral health. When your teeth are able to properly function, you can also benefit from smoother digestion, decrease your chances of jaw pain and gum disease, and enjoy great mental health.

Orthodontists fix issues such as bite complications, crowded or crooked teeth, and malocclusion; whatever they can do to ensure your teeth are able to thrive and your smile is straight. Each patient’s specific needs are looked at in detail before a unique treatment plan is recommended.

What treatments fall under the purview of orthodontics?

Because orthodontists work by adjusting the position of teeth, some common treatments we perform in the office include clear braces, Invisalign aligners, and metal braces. Our team is proud to offer different treatment options so you can receive the one that works best with your specific needs AND your budget.

The Role Dental Insurance Plays

First of all, what is dental insurance?

Dental insurance is a type of insurance coverage that covers regular dental checkups, common dental issues, and some preventative treatments.  It’s a great start to promote your oral health and help pay for the cost. You’ll pay the insurance company a monthly premium to keep your coverage active. This cost depends on the type of plan and coverage you choose.

We can help you figure out your coverage!

It’s important to note that not all dental insurance plans cover orthodontic procedures for adults. We’ll check the fine print on your behalf to figure out exactly who and what is covered under your policy.

That being said, we do not require patients to have dental insurance. Everyone is able to come in for treatment. Our team understands that figuring out your exact coverage details can be confusing, but we’re here to help. We know it’s important that you not only receive the best treatment but you get the best deal.

The Average Cost of Braces

Braces have dramatically advanced over the past decade. They are now more comfortable and effective than ever. Also, new treatment options are now available, such as Invisalign. Both treatment methods have the power to transform your smile and provide amazing, long-lasting results in improving your oral and mental health. General cost depends on how complex your case is, the type of braces you choose, and how long you will need them.

Without insurance

  • Invisalign aligners

The average range is about $3,500 to $8,000 for the whole series of aligners.

  • Metal braces

The average range is about $3,000 to $7,000 for a full treatment.

  • Clear braces

The average range is about $4,000 to $8,000, slightly more than traditional metal.

With insurance

When orthodontics are included in your insurance plan, they can cover anywhere between 50-80% of treatment costs, with the rest being paid out of pocket. However, as mentioned, some plans don’t cover anything. That being said, it can be difficult to offer a reliable average cost with insurance. During your free consultation with us, we are happy to discuss what the cost of your personal treatment would look like with your plan.

Making Payment Accessible For All

The good news is dental insurance is not the only way to pay. Johnson Orthodontics offers several payment options so patients know exactly what to expect before treatment has even begun. Some patients pay in full before treatment has begun and, in turn, receive a discount for early payment. Others take advantage of our in-office monthly plan, which involves a down payment and subsequent interest-free payments afterward.

We also work with a third-party financing option called Orthobanc. This company offers convenient payment options and makes it easy for you with reminders sent to your devices. Whether or not you use insurance to cover your orthodontic treatment, we’ll do everything we can to help you find a payment option to fit your budget.
